Season’s Greetings!
Here’s our xmas (email) message of this year! Happy holidays!
This past year has been the year of working towards the emigration, even though we didn’t move just yet. We hope to leave in the last week of February, if we get the work permit in time!
In the first months of the year, the (very detailed) information of Nico’s nursing education has been assessed by the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (he also had to gather some documents and pass an academic English test for this) and after they approved, we went to Regina for two weeks in June, where Nico wrote the Canadian Registered Nurses Exam on the 6th. In July he heard he had passed the test (which he didn’t expect), so that was party time! After that, the employer in Regina could start with the official joboffer (August), they had to get the approval that they could hire a foreign worker for the job (October), and with that (and some more documents) we could apply for the actual work permit (November) at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. In the meantime we sold our house to the first viewers (wow!) and we can stay until February 28th at the latest. Statistics say it could take 2-3 months before we hear something from the Canadian Embassy, but when Nico had the medical examination for the application, the doc said it usually takes 4 weeks after that - which would mean we could hear something in January. That would be great for our planning!
Although just last week we lost another loved one in Regina who we will miss terribly (our friend Tim’s dad Jack) I don’t want to end this Xmas letter as sad as I ended last year’s letter. Right now we are grieving for Jack and we still miss Dave and Danny so much, but a lot of good has come out of it: from what originally started as a tribute to Dave and Danny, Band of Brothers Inc. has evolved into a non-profit organization committed to raising funds to assist families with costs associated with recovering from cancer that are not covered by Saskatchewan Health Services. I’m sure that the guys could not be any prouder!
When we were in Regina in June, Nico got a fortune cookie at a Chinese restaurant that said: “Focus on your long-term goal. Your wish will be granted next year.” He kept it in his wallet all this time. And here we are, about to end this year and start the next with selling furniture, wrapping up things over here, trying to prepare some stuff over there, quitting our jobs, packing the rest of our things to be sent by seafreight and then… hopefully finally move to Regina!! Hier is onze (email) kerstbrief van dit jaar! Fijne feestdagen!
Het afgelopen jaar was het jaar van naar de emigratie toewerken, ook al zijn we nog niet verhuisd. We hopen in de laatste week van februari te vertrekken, als we de werkvergunning op tijd krijgen!
In de eerste maanden van het jaar is de (zeer gedetailleerde) informatie over Nico’s verpleegopleiding beoordeeld door de Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association (hij moest hiervoor ook wat andere documenten verzamelen en voor een academische Engelse test slagen) en toen zij het goedgekeurd hadden, gingen we in juni twee weken naar Regina toe, waar Nico het Canadese Registered Nurses examen heeft gemaakt op de 6e. In juli hoorde hij dat hij was geslaagd (wat hij niet verwacht had), dus dat werd feest! Daarna kon de werkgever in Regina officiëel de baan aanbieden (augustus), zij moesten toestemming krijgen om een buitenlander aan te mogen nemen (oktober), en daarmee (en met nog wat documenten) konden wij de eigenlijke werkvergunning aanvragen (november) bij de Canadese Ambassade in Berlijn. Intussen hebben we ons huis verkocht aan de eerste kijkers (wow!) en kunnen we tot uiterlijk 28 februari blijven. Statistisch gezien kan het 2-3 maanden duren voor we wat van de ambassade horen, maar toen Nico voor de aanvraag op medische keuring was, zei de dokter dat het meestal dan nog 4 weken duurt - wat zou betekenen dat we in januari al wat kunnen horen. Dat zou goed uitkomen voor onze planning!
Hoewel we net vorige week weer een dierbare in Regina verloren hebben die we erg zullen missen (onze vriend Tim’s vader Jack), wil ik deze kerstbrief niet zo verdrietig eindigen als die van vorig jaar. Op dit moment rouwen we om Jack en we missen Dave en Danny ook nog erg, maar er is ook veel goeds uitgekomen: van wat in eerste instantie begon als een eerbetoon aan Dave en Danny, is Band Of Brothers Inc. uitgegroeid naar een non-profit organisatie die zich toelegt op het werven van geld voor families met kosten die samenhangen met het herstellen van kanker en die niet vergoed worden door Saskatchewan Health Services. De jongens zouden niet trotser kunnen zijn!
Toen we in juni in Regina waren, kreeg Nico een gelukskoekje bij een Chinees restaurant waarop stond: “concentreer je op je lange-termijn doel. Je wens zal volgend jaar uitkomen.” Hij heeft het al die tijd in zijn portemonnee bewaard. En hier zijn we dan, op het punt om dit jaar af te sluiten en het volgende jaar te starten met het verkopen van meubels, dingen hier afronden, proberen sommige dingen daar voor te bereiden, onze banen opzeggen, de rest van onze spullen inpakken om per zeevracht te versturen en dan… hopelijk eindelijk naar Regina te verhuizen!!
