Sunday May 1st
For our 5th visit to the Banff-Jasper area (and to meet our Dutch friends Els, Maurice and their son Brian), we left Regina at 1.45pm (Nico came out of nightshift and had to sleep some hours). We stopped in Swift Current for gas and propane, which took some time as we had to find that first. Turned out the Co-Op had it on the north side of the highway, but we didn’t see it until we were already crossing the road to go to Husky on the south side. After that fairly long break, we kept going until sunset and made it as far as Brooks, Alberta! In the afternoon we got a text from Els that they arrived in Calgary (flew in with a direct KLM flight from Amsterdam). We’re close!
Monday May 2nd
We only had a few hours to go to Airdrie, where we’d be meeting Els, Maurice and Brian, so we didn’t have to rush. We stayed in touch while we were on our way and they were getting their rental motorhome from Fraserway. We would see each other at the Walmart parking lot and we got there at the same time, around noon, such timing! 
) After a great reunion after 3 years, admiring each other’s motorhomes and our cats and some shopping in the Walmart, we drove to Banff over the 1A. That was a first for us (we had always taken the 1 or the 22X underneath Calgary) and we enjoyed the different views from the other side of the valley and through the forest. Near Canmore we saw a lot of bighorn sheep! In Canmore we joined the 1 again and soon after we entered Banff National Park where our friends had to get their National Parks Pass (ours from last year is still valid). On the Tunnel Mountain Campground we asked for sites near a shelter, so we could BBQ in there (it was still wintery cold). We (except Nico) first took the bus to town to check out the stores. When we got back around 8, Maurice got a fire going in the stove in the shelter, we admired the elk that walked by on the campground, Nico barbecued and we had a great first night together in there!
Tuesday May 3rd
We took our time for breakfast, Maurice made us eggs, bacon and hashbrowns Then we left the snowy campground to go to Lake Louise. We took the Bow Valley Parkway and stopped at the Johnston Canyon. There still was a lot of snow and ice in there, so most of the path was pretty slippery! We made it as far as the first falls though and it was very pretty in this winter setting. On our way up, we suddenly heard some growling and all stopped dead in our tracks right away.. then we didn’t see or hear anything! Did we hear a bear or cougar?? Was it a sound from further away (but where, in the canyon?)? Nobody was sure what we heard, so we continued. When we came back another woman told us in the same area she thought she saw a bear or heard something… what?? Nico doesn’t believe it, but I think there must’ve been something! As the giftshop/coffeecorner was still closed, we continued our journey on the beautiful Bow Valley Parkway. We wanted to stop for a picnic at the Storm 
Mountain viewpoint, but it was still closed, so we decided to get coffee and a snack in the bakery in Lake Louise (Village). After that break and a little snow storm, we went to the visitor centre and to Lake Louise itself. It looked just like it had all winter, still frozen and piles of snow! We also checked out the Chateau and then went back to the valley to check in on the campground. Only part of it was open (again because there was a lot of snow) but we found a double spot for the both of us. Time to BBQ again And shower, and sit together for the rest of the night.
Wednesday May 4th
Icefields Parkway time!! Luckily the sky looked much brighter today, a mix of sun and clouds. After getting gas, we took the famous 93 up to Jasper, around 10am. First stop was my favourite spot, Bow Lake. I had suggested to have breakfast on the pullout on the side of the lake, but once again it was closed (not cleared of snow). We could turn into the access road to the Num-Ti-Jah lodge and park on that parking lot, but weren’t able to get close to the lake there as someone was still shoveling the huge amount of snow that was still there. After having breakfast together on the parking lot (Maurice made pancakes), we stopped a few kms further to get to the Peyto Lake viewpoint. We had wanted to drive up the road to the parking lot for buses and the handicapped, but no such luck. We had to walk through the snow, a narrow trail was made over the road we had planned to take (so not the normal trail in the summer). But it was worth the effort as the view over a white Peyto Lake and very clear valley was fantastic again! Everything looked fantastic on the Icefields Parkway, esp with so much snow on the mountains and the great weather! It was our 5th visit and 8th time driving this Parkway and the scenic route possibly looked more beautiful then ever! After lunch at the Crossing (Saskatchewan Crossing), we briefly stopped at the viewpoint after the Big Bend and visited the Icefields Centre at the Athabasca Glacier. After that we stopped once more to visit the Athabasca Falls. There wasn’t much water yet, the falls were partly frozen and we could only get to the first viewpoint and not to the other side (still closed) 
We got to the Wapiti winter camping around 6.30pm. See how only 230km and just a handful of the sites along the way, take you a whole day! The campground was initially a disappointment for me, because I had expected that a part of the regular campground (in the forest) would be open, but it was only an open parkinglot, with electric hookups and a shower building though. But all in all the surrounding scenery is still awesome of course and we did have a good time there. In the evening we sat inside anyway and we were still so full from lunch that we only had smokies on a bun (took us a while to convince Brian that smokies are smoked sausages and we weren’t going to eat our Smokey

Thursday May 5th
No rush today, so we could sleep in a little and have a leisurely breakfast on one of the picnic tables around the parking lot, erm I mean campground. Our chef Maurice prepared a hot meal again with eggs, bacon and hashbrowns Then we checked out Jasper, did some shopping and had a coffee. We chilled for a bit on the campground before heading back to Jasper for supper (Maurice and Els took us out to a restaurant for our last evening together) and had a great meal at “Somewhere Else” Then we took the Maligne Lake Road to Medicine Lake and Maligne Lake, 
hopefully to see some wildlife. It was a beautiful drive as always, but esp. at Maligne Lake there was still so much snow that you could hardly get to the lake. I went as far as the deck of the restaurant that was still closed. The lake was still frozen as well. We didn’t stay long and drove back to Jasper. We didn’t see any wildlife until we were back on the 16 where we saw a coyote and lots of elk. We ended the evening with some drinks at the Loonens’ motorhome.

Friday May 6th
Unfortunately it was already time to say goodbye to Els, Maurice and Brian. It has been so good to see them again and it was too short, so it was tough, but at least we’ll see each other again in September. We drove to the 16 and literally split up there, they went left to B.C. and we turned right to Edmonton. Our first stop was Edmonton where we visited Ben’s Meat & Deli for some Dutch goodies (way too much liquorice and sweets, but also frikandellen, bamischijven (they called them Indonesian bami pucks) and croquettes)! Then we briefly visited Sebastiaan (CBB) and little Lars (Mariska was at work) in Sherwood Park, just east of Edmonton. We couldn’t stay long, as we wanted to be in Lloydminster at supper time. We got there at 7pm, it was good to see Mark again (who lived with us for 4 months a year ago) and we had supper at a Chinese buffet. Yummy!! Back at his place we chatted a bit, watched TV, surfed the net, and went to sleep in our motorhome (in front of the house) in time.
Saturday May 7th
Time for the last part to Regina. It was still pretty long and tiring. We saw a coyote outside of the Battlefields, took a break in a field near Maymont and stopped in Dundurn (south of Saskatoon) for a late lunch/early supper. Around 6pm we were finally home again!

zondag 1 mei
Voor ons vijfde bezoek aan de Banff/Jasper regio (en onze Nederlandse vrienden Els, Maurice en hun zoon Brian te treffen), verlieten we Regina om 13.45 (Nico kwam uit de nachtdienst en moest nog een paar uur slapen). We stopten in Swift Current om te tanken (en voor propaangas), wat nogal wat tijd kostte, omdat we niet wisten waar we propaan konden bijvullen. Bleek dat de Co-op aan de noordkant van de weg het had, maar dat zagen we pas toen we de weg overstaken naar de Husky aan de andere kant. Na die relatief lange pauze, reden we door tot zonsondergang en kwamen tot Brooks, Alberta! ‘s Middags kregen we een sms van Els dat ze in Calgary aan waren gekomen (ze hadden een directe vlucht vanuit Amsterdam met de KLM). We zijn er bijna!
maandag 2 mei
We hadden nog maar een paar uur te gaan naar Airdrie, waar we Els,.Maurice en Brian zouden zien, dus we hoefden ons niet te haasten. We bleven in contact toen we onderweg waren en zij hun camper kregen bij Fraserway. We zouden elkaar treffen op de Walmart parkeerplaats en we kwamen daar tegelijkertijd aan rond 12u, wat een timing! Na een geweldige reünie na 3 jaar, het bewonderen van elkaars camper en katten, en shoppen bij de Walmart, reden we naar Banff over de 1A. Dat was voor ons de 1e keer (we hadden tot nog toe altijd de 1 genomen, of de 22X onder Calgary door) en we genoten van de andere uitzichten vanaf de andere kant van de vallei en door het bos. Vlakbij Canmore zagen we een boel bighorn sheep (dikhoorn schapen)! In Canmore kwamen we weer op de 1 uit en kort daarna kwamen we bij de ingang van Banff National Park waar onze vrienden hun National Parks Pass moesten kopen (de onze van vorig jaar was nog geldig). Op de Tunnel Mountain camping vroegen we voor plaatsen bij een shelter, zodat we daar met z’n allen in konden barbecuen (het was nog steeds winterachtig weer). Wij (behalve Nico) namen de bus naar het stadje om te winkelen. Toen we rond 8 uur terugkwamen, stookte Maurice een vuurtje in de kachel in de shelter, bewonderden we de elk die over de camping liepen, barbecuede Nico en we hadden daar een gezellige eerste avond samen!
dnsdag 3 mei
We namen de tijd voor het ontbijt, Maurice bakte eieren, bacon en hashbrowns (aardappels in kleine stukjes) Toen verlieten we de deels besneeuwde camping om naar Lake Louise te gaan. We namen de Bow Valley Parkway naar Johnston Canyon. Er was nog steeds veel sneeuw en ijs daar, dus het pad was voor het grootste deel nog erg glad! We haalden echter toch nog de eerste watervallen en het was erg mooi in deze winterse omgeving. Op de heenweg hoorde we opeens gegrom en we stonden allemaal direct stil en keken in dezelfde richting… maar we zagen of hoorden niks meer! Hadden we een beer of poema gehoord?? Was het een geluid van verder weg (maar waar, in de kloof?)? Niemand wist zeker wat we hadden gehoord, dus we liepen door. Toen we terugkwamen zei een andere vrouw op ongeveer dezelfde stuk dat ze dacht dat ze een beer had gezien of gehoord… wat?? Nico gelooft het niet, maar ik denk dat er toch iets gezeten moet hebben! Aangezien het winkel/restaurant pand nog dicht was, vervolgden we onze weg op de mooie Bow Valley Parkway. We wilden picknicken bij het Storm Mountain uitzichtspunt, maar dat was nog steeds dicht, dus besloten we maar koffie te drinken met iets erbij bij het bakkertje in Lake Louise Village. Na die pauze en een kleine sneeuwbui, gingen we naar het bezoekerscentrum en naar Lake Louise zelf. Het zag er nog altijd uit als in de hele winter, nog steeds bevroren en met een dikke laag sneeuw! We bezochten ook het Chateau en toen terug naar het dal om naar de camping te gaan. Slechts een deel was maar open (alweer omdat er nog veel sneeuw lag), maar we vonden een dubbele plaats voor ons allebei. Tijd om weer te barbecuen En te douchen en samen te zitten kletsen voor de rest van de avond.
woensdag 4 mei
Tijd voor de Icefields Parkway!! Gelukkig zag de hemel er vandaag een stuk helderder uit, een mix van zon en wolken. Na tanken, namen we rond 10 uur de beroemde 93 naar Jasper.Eerste halte was mijn favoriete plekje, Bow Lake. Ik had voorgesteld om daar aan de rand van het meer te ontbijten, maar ook die was dicht (vol met sneeuw). We konden wel de inrit naar de Num-Ti-Jah lodge in en op de parkeerplaats parkeren, maar we kwamen niet dicht bij het meer, er was nog altijd iemand de grote hoeveelheid sneeuw aan het ruimen naar het hotel en het meer toe. Nadat we samen ontbeten hadden op de parkeerplaats (Maurice had pannenkoeken gemaakt), reden we een stukje verder naar het Peyto Lake uitzichtspunt. We hadden het weggetje naar boven voor bussen en gehandicapten willen rijden, maar dat ging niet. We moesten door de sneeuw lopen, een smal pad over de weg die we hadden willen rijden (dus niet het normale pad in de zomer). Maar het was de moeite waard, want het uitzicht over een wit Peyto Lake en erg heldere vallei was weer fantastisch! Alles zag er fantastisch uit op de Icefields Parkway, vooral met zoveel sneeuw op de bergen en het mooie weer! Het was onze 5e keer hier en 8e keer dat we deze Parkway reden en de schilderachtige weg zag er mogelijk nog mooier uit dan ooit ! Na lunch in de Crossing (Saskatchewan Crossing), stopten we nog even bij het uitzichtspunt na de Big Bend en bezochten we het Icefields Centre bij de Athabasca Glacier. Daarna stopten we nog een keer bij de Athabasca Falls. Er was nog niet veel water, de waterval was deels bevroren en we konden slechts tot het eerste uitzichtspunt komen en niet aan de andere kant (nog dicht) We kwamen rond 18.30u bij de Wapiti winter camping aan. Zie je hoe je de hele dag kunt doen over slechts 230 km en een handvol uitstapjes onderweg? De camping was in eerste instantie een teleurstelling voor me, want ik had verwacht dat een deel van de gewone camping (in het bos) open zou zijn, maar het was slechts een open parkeerplaats, wel met stroom en een douchegebouw. Maar al met al lag het natuurlijk toch wel in de mooie natuur en hadden we wel plezier daar. ‘s Avonds zaten we toch binnen en we zaten nog zo vol van de lunch dat we alleen maar smokies op een broodje aten (het kostte enige tijd om Brian ervan te overtuigen dat smokies gerookte worsten waren en dat we niet onze Smokey op gingen eten )

donderdag 5 mei
Geen haast vandaag, dus we konden een beetje uitslapen en op ons gemak ontbijten aan een van de picknick tafels rond de parkeerplaats, uhh ik bedoel camping. Onze kok Maurice bereidde weer een warm ontbijt met eieren, bacon en hashbrowns (stukjes aardappel) Toen gingen we naar Jasper, wat shoppen en koffie drinken. We brachten nog wat tijd op de camping door voordat we naar Jasper teruggingen voor het avondeten (Maurice en Els trakteerden ons voor onze laatste avond samen) en we hadden een lekker maal bij “Somewhere Else” Toen namen we de Maligne Lake Road naar Medicine Lake en Maligne Lake, in de hoop wildlife te zien. Het was een mooie rit zoals altijd, maar vooral bij Maligne Lake was nog zoveel sneeuw dat je amper bij het meer kon komen. Ik ging tot het terras van het restaurant dat nog dicht was. Het meer was ook nog bevroren. We bleven niet lang en reden terug naar Jasper. We zagen geen wildlife totdat we weer op de 16 waren waar we een coyote zagen en een boel elk. We eindigden de avond met wat te drinken in de camper van de Loonens.

vrijdag 6 mei
Helaas was het alweer tijd om afscheid te nemen van Els, Maurice en Brian. Het was zo heerlijk ze weer te zien en het was te kort, dus het was moeilijk, maar we zien elkaar tenminste weer in september. We reden naar de 16 toe en daar scheidden onze wegen letterlijk, zij gingen linksaf naar B.C. en wij rechtsaf naar Edmonton. Onze eerste stop was Edmonton waar we Ben’s Meat & Deli opzochten voor wat Nederlandse lekkernijen (veel te veel drop, snoep, maar ook frikandellen, bamischijven (ze noemden die Indonesian bami pucks) en kroketten)! Toen bezochten we nog even Sebastiaan (CBB) en de kleine Lars (Mariska was nog op het werk) in Sherwood Park, net ten oosten van Edmonton. We konden niet lang blijven, want we wilden rond etenstijd in Lloydminster zijn. We kwamen daar om een uur of 7 aan, het was leuk om Mark weer te zien (die vorig jaar 4 maanden bij ons inwoonde) en we gingen eten bij een Chinees buffet. Yummy!! Terug in zijn huis kletsten we wat, keken we TV, internetten we en gingen op tijd naar bed in onze camper (voor het huis).
zaterdag 7 mei
Tijd om het laatste stukje naar Regina te rijden. Het was toch nog lang en vermoeiend. We zagen een coyote net buiten de Battlefords, pauzeerden we even in een veld nabij Maymont en stopten we in Dundurn (ten zuiden van Saskatoon) voor een late lunch/vroeg avondeten. Rond 6 uur waren we eindelijk weer thuis!
