This trip was a typical weekend trip, from Friday noon until Sunday afternoon. We chose another regional park, this time even closer to home, Dunnet Regional Park near Avonlea, about 90 km SW of Regina. The park and campground are situated in the beautiful green and forested (with ash and maple trees) valley of the meandering Avonlea creek and close to the Avonlea dam that created Dunnet lake.

The scenery on the way over was fairly typical prairie stuff until we came close to Avonlea (and the 880m high Dirt Hills west of it). You drive through the valley by the golf course, then drive south through the little town of Avonlea (population 450) and back east to access the valley again by the lake and the regional park. The valley was starting to get greener, or at least the smaller bushes had quite some leaves, but the bigger trees not yet. Lots of green grass too, so all in all a huge difference with the (at that time still) barren campground by Manitou Beach two weeks ago. The lots of the campground are situated in that forested area of ash and maple trees, but unfortunately they are too small for bigger units and we got a spot in the office/pool/recreation area facing a ball diamond. At first I was disappointed about that (no other campers near to have some interaction with, open site instead of in the forest), but it turned out to be a quite good spot after all. It’ll probably be noisier later in the summer when the pool’s open, but now it was quiet, right behind us was a picnic area between the trees and by the Avonlea creek and the concession stand was close by for a snack, coffee or iced cappuccino. We had a simple outdoor (septic tank) toilet nearby, but on the last day we found flush toilets in the recreation building next to us Showers are probably only in the central building on the campground itself, but that was quite far from us (well, I’m guessing around 800m).

Friday was still a bit chilly and windy, but in the sun it was nice enough to stay outside all afternoon anyway. Nico assembled the propane barbecue we bought for the motorhome and we tested it. It’s a table model, but you can also extend the legs. Worked perfect!! After supper and close to sunset we walked to the actual campground just behind the hill we were looking at. What a gorgeous valley! Most of the electric sites (with and without other hookups) were seasonal, and there was a non serviced area even deeper in the woods. In the evening we watched a DVD inside (Nico had bought another 30 dollar player that plays PAL as well, for our European dvds and copies).

Saturday was just a gorgeous day. Probably around 22 degrees, and after breakfast (eggs, sausages and buns and Nico went to get coffee from the concession stand by the office) we had put the awning out and read and did sudoku puzzles in the shade. Awesome! The cats’  leashes were attached to the trashcan handles and we regularly had to set them free from their entanglements (or let them back inside every now and then when they wanted to). Nico took some walks with Tess and Gandalf. For the last walk he literally had to drag Gandalf back ‘home’, that was hilarious (see video)!!

At the concession stand you can get coffee, pop, ice cream etc and lots of snacks, so for lunch we got some fries/poutine and ribs. A bit later we went for a walk to the lake. We took the ‘Nature Trail’ from the picnic area behind us, which started with a little suspension bridge over the creek. The trail was very narrow and sometimes so narrow, close to the creek and sloping, that I had to make steps sideways while holding on to branches to get passed them. Well, that was as adventurous as we get, pfff! After following the creek for a while we ended up by the dam and followed the regular road back to the campground After an iced cappuccino we went back to the motorhome where I felt something in my shirt. A tick! Oh yeah right… ticks! We had been walking through lots of bushes, so immediately I undressed, found 2 ticks in my shirt and one on the outside of my pants. Luckily nothing on my body. I think I checked everything 2 or 3 more times in the next hours. Brrr. We did get some mosquito bites despite the Off spray, but the bugs didn’t bother me too much anymore back at our site and a new layer of Off. We barbecued and sat outside until 9pm and watched a DVD inside until we went to bed at 11pm. What a perfect day (well except for the bugs)!

Last time we had checked, it was supposed to rain on Sunday, but we woke up to another sunny day. There were a few clouds and it was windy again, but still nice to have breakfast outside. Check out time was 12, so we got home fairly early (it’s only a 75 minutes drive). Backing into its new spot in the back yard went fine this time, as the entrance is clear and level and RV ready now!

Dunnet Regional Park Campground

The main campground has fairly small but gorgeous lots in the forested valley, for bigger units there are a few sites near the picnic area close to the recreation/pool/office area. All sites have firepits, thrash cans and picnic tables, water from central taps, $25-$30 (our site near the picnic area had 30 amp power for $25), day pass or seasonal Regional Parks pass needed ($35 for 2009), I think the modern washrooms/showers are free (most WCs are just the not-so-appealing basic septic tank type) but we weren’t in there, pool, concession stand, playground, baseball diamonds, fishing, boat launch, mini-golf, camp kitchen, group facilities, laundry, no internet. Golf course further north in the valley, it’s 7 km to the village of Avonlea (www.avonlea.com) with shops, grocer, restaurant etc.

Deze trip was een typisch weekend uitje van vrijdagmiddag tot zondag. We kozen weer een regionaal park, dit keer zelfs dichterbij huis, Dunnet Regional Park bij Avonlea, ongeveer 90 km ten ZW van Regina. Het park en de camping liggen in de prachtig groene en (met es en esdoorns) beboste vallei van de Avonlea beek en vlakbij de Avonlea dam die Dunnet Lake creëerde.

Het landschap onderweg was vrij gewone prairie en zo totdat we in de buurt van Avonlea (en de 880m hoge Dirt Hills ten westen ervan) kwamen. Je rijdt door de vallei bij de golfbaan, dan rijd je naar het zuiden door het kleine plaatsje Avonlea (450 inwoners) en weer terug naar het oosten om weer bij de vallei te komen bij het meer en het regionale park. De vallei begon al groener te worden, of ten minste de lagere begroeing had aardig wat bladeren, maar de grotere bomen nog niet. Veel groen gras ook, dus al met al heel wat anders dat de (toen nog) kale camping bij Manitou Lake twee weken geleden. De plaatsen van de camping liggen in dat beboste gedeelte met es en esdoorns, maar helaas zijn die te klein voor grotere units en kregen we een plek in het kantoor/zwembad/recreatie gedeelte met uitzicht op een softbal veld. In eerste instantie was ik daar wel teleurgesteld over (geen contact met andere kampeerders, open plek ipv in het bos), maar het bleek toch wel een goede plek te zijn. Het zal wellicht rumoeriger zijn als het zwembad ook open is later in de zomer, maar nu was het rustig, direct achter ons was een picknick plaats en de Avonlea beek en de kiosk was dichtbij voor een snack, koffie of een iced cappuccino. We hadden een simpele buiten WC (septic tank) vlakbij, maar we kwamen er op de laatste dag achter dat er ook gewone toiletten waren in het recreatie gebouw naast ons Douches zijn er waarschijnlijk alleen in het centrale gebouw op de camping zelf, maar dat was best ver van ons (nou ja, ik schat een 800m).

Vrijdag was het nog wat winderig en kil, maar in de zon was het toch zo lekker dat we de hele middag buiten konden zitten. Nico zette de gas barbecue in elkaar die we voor de camper gekocht hadden en testte hem. Het is een tafelmodel, maar je kunt de poten ook verlengen. Werkte goed! Na het eten en kort voor zonsondergang wandelden we naar de eigenlijke camping aan de andere kant van de heuvel waar we tegenaan keken. Wat een prachtige vallei! De meeste plaatsen met stroom (met en zonder verdere aansluitingen) waren seizoensplaatsen, en er was een gedeelte zonder enige aansluitingen wat dieper in het bos.’s Avonds keken we binnen nog een DVD (Nico had nog een speler gekocht voor 30 dollar die ook PAL afspeelt, voor onze Europese DVDs en kopieën).

Zaterdag was gewoon een zalige dag. Waarschijnlijk zo’n 22 graden, en na het ontbijt (ei en worstjes en broodjes en Nico ging koffie halen bij de kiosk bij het kantoor) rolden we de luifel uit en lazen en puzzelden (sudoku) we in de schaduw. Heerlijk! De lijnen van de katten zaten vast aan de hendels van de vuilnisbak en we moesten ze regelmatig ontzetten omdat ze zich vastgelopen hadden (of af en toe naar binnen laten als ze dat wilden). Nico wandelde nog wat met Tess en Gandalf. Bij de laatste wandeling moest hij Gandalf letterlijk naar ‘huis’ sleuren, dat was lachen (zie video)!!

Bij die kiosk kun je koffie, fris, ijs etc en ook diverse snacks krijgen, dus voor de lunch haalden we wat friet/poutine (friet met jus en kaas) en ribjes. Wat later wandelden we naar het meer. We namen de ‘Nature Trail’ (Natuur Pad) vanaf de picknick plaats achter ons, die begon met een hangbrug over de beek. Het pad was erg smal en soms zo smal, dicht bij de beek en scheef, dat ik zijwaartse stappen moest maken en me aan takken vast moest houden om erlangs te komen. Nou, avontuurlijker dan dat zijn we ook niet hoor, pfff! Na de beek een tijdje gevolgd te hebben kwamen we bij de dam uit en liepen we over de gewone weg terug naar de camping Na een iced cappuccino gingen we terug naar de camper, waar ik wat voelde kriebelen in mijn t-shirt. Een teek! Oh ja natuurlijk… teken! We hadden door flink wat struikgewas gelopen, dus ik kleedde me meteen uit, vond 2 teken in mijn t-shirt en 1 op de buitenkant van mijn broek. Gelukkig niks op mijn lijf. Ik denk dat ik alles nog wel 2 of 3 keer heb nagekeken in de uren daarna. Brrr. We hadden wel wat muggensteken opgelopen ondanks de Off spray, maar de beestjes vielen me niet meer zoveel lastig op onze plek na nog een laagje Off. We barbecueden en zaten tot een uur of 9 buiten en keken binnen nog een DVD tot we om 11 uur gingen slapen. Wat een perfecte dag (nou ja behalve de beestjes dan)!

De laatste keer dat we gekeken hadden, zou het gaan regenen op zondag, maar we werden wakker met de zon. Er waren een paar wolken en het waaide weer flink, maar het was lekker genoeg om buiten te ontbijten. We moesten voor 12 uur weer weg zijn, dus we waren vrij vroeg thuis (het is maar een 75 min. rijden). In de achtertuin staken we de camper dit keer zonder problemen achteruit op zijn nieuwe plek nu de ingang vrij en vlak en camper-klaar gemaakt is!

Dunnet Regional Park Campground

De hoofd camping heeft vrij kleine maar erg mooie plaatsen in de beboste vallei, voor grotere units zijn er een aantal plaatsen bij de picknick plaats bij het zwembad/kantoor/recreatie gedeelte. Alle plaatsen hebben vuurkorven, vuilnisbakken en picknick tafels, centrale taps voor drinkwater, $25-$30 (onze plek bij de picknick plaats had 30 amp stroom voor $25), dag- of seizoenspas Regional Parks nodig ($35 voor 2009), ik denk dat de moderne wcs/douches gratis zijn (de meeste wcs zijn van het niet zo aantrekkelijke septic tank type) maar we zijn er niet binnen geweest, zwembad, kiosk, speeltuin, baseball velden, vissen, boten trailerhelling, mini-golf, camping keuken, groepsfaciliteiten, wasmachine, geen internet. Golfbaan verderop in de vallei, 7 km naar Avonlea (www.avonlea.com) met winkels, supermarkt, restaurant etc.
