Welcome!

We are Nico and Marlies Wobben and in February 2008 we moved from the Netherlands to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada! Nico is an RN at the General Hospital and I (Marlies) work from home, as an administrator at Canada Life and for my own web design business Feel The Fire. And we have 7 cats!

Crowsnest Highway, Home

Time to go back east again… We took the 33 to the 3, the Crowsnest Highway, and went as far as Castlegar on the first day. We had a nice break in Greenwood, a picturesque little town. The second day we drove over the Kootenay Pass where we suddenly had snow (!!) and Nico saw a glimpse of a bear. We visited Murray and Sophia in Creston and ended our day at the B&B of Theo and Anja in Kimberley. The third day we drove out of the mountains and onto the prairies, yay! We spent the last night in Medicine Hat and drove home today. Home sweet home!

West Kelowna, South Okanagan

Yesterday we checked out West-Kelowna and specifically Glenrosa… this must be our favourite neighbourhood here! We visited Hans and Mathilda Looman and drove around for a bit.

Today we went on a bigger drive, John and Diana took us for a drive through the South Okanagan, to Penticton and Osoyoos, where we had lunch and visited the NK’MIP Desert Cultural Centre, a beautiful indoor/outdoor interpretive centre to learn more about the desert and the natives in this area. Great day!

Kelowna!

Besides catching up with John and Diana, we’re enjoying Kelowna! We’ve been to the city centre and the harbour, we love the gorgeous location on Okanagan Lake. We’ve also been driving to Lake Country along the lake and to Mission where we took great pics in Cedar Creek Park with vistas over the lake. We also went to the farmer’s market where we met Monique with her Dutch stroopwafels and we met Linda and Ab for coffee here in Kelowna (they live near Fintry).

Work-wise we’re not getting anywhere though. Nico has been emailing and phoning, but couldn’t get more out of contacts then he already got over email from home and the HR contact of the Health Region didn’t have time to meet him (we thought it could help to show his face). The BC work centres were a big let down too, I had expected them to have more contacts with employers and other info, but they pretty much only asked if we had googled for jobs and pointed to their computers one can use. Duh 🙁 We’re still having an excellent vacation though!

Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kelowna

We chatted with our Dutch hosts, explored Salmon Arm a bit and also visited the Larch Hills Winery. Oh man those wines were so yummy that we left with a box full of bottles!!! After two nights we finally went to the Okanagan. First we met with realtor Jake Russell in Vernon, such a great guy! We visited Kal Beach and drove to Kelowna to John and Diana’s apartment not very far from downtown. Happy reunion!! <3

Calgary, Golden, Salmon Arm

After our business at the Dutch embassy yesterday morning, we visited Dave near the Olympic Park on the western edge of Calgary. We then drove to the Rockies and took some time to stroll through Canmore. We crossed the Rockies and stayed the night in Golden. Today we continued our trip and stopped in Revelstoke, the Three Valley Gap, a cute store near Malakwa and the Dutch ice cream place in Sicamous. We drove along the Shuswap Lake until we reached our destination for the next few days, Salmon Arm. It was a gorgeous drive, but the Trans Canada Highway is quite narrow in the mountains and with all the traffic it was quite stressful! We are now settled in our beautiful B&B 🙂

We’re Outta Here!

We needed to get outta town!! This must’ve been the craziest, most emotional week ever. May 4th Rob dies, in the morning of May 5th our friends Anne and Tim welcome their son Jesse into this world. A few days later our Dutch friends Chantalle and Roald have their daughter Avalon and just last night, Nico found out that his manager Joy was killed in a freak plane crash (mid-air collison of two small planes)! You can’t make that shit up :O

Thankfully it’s vacation time (orientation trip to BC) and as soon as we hit the highway in nice sunny weather, we left everything behind and could enjoy the road trip. We drove to Calgary, where we checked into our hotel downtown and went to visit Tanya and Jeremy. Tomorrow morning we have to renew our passports in the Dutch embassy here.
